THE WOMEN – TROUSER ISSUE

This issue is quite controversial with certain believers claiming that God addressed the issue of women wearing trousers when He gave the laws to the children of Israel. I once met a Christian brother who could have sworn that God actually said this. When I urged him to show me the exact scripture where God was supposed to have given this law, he quoted the same scripture frequently used by others to support this claim.
Deuteronomy 22:5: “The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord thy God.”
A lot of people have taken this to mean that the woman should not wear trousers and that men should not wear wrappers. Those who do so are said to be contravening the law of God. Some claim that men can wear wrappers or robes, because the way the men wear them is different from the way women wear them.
But read the scripture again, carefully and in context, you will find out that God was not referring to a fashion. He did not say a man should not wear a fashion that pertains to a woman or vice versa. If He had said fashion, He could as well have gone ahead to give them tailors.
The word translated “Pertaineth or pertains” means “belongs to”. Thus what God told them was that a woman should not wear anything which a man had worn, that is, which belongs to a man. He did not tell them, “Don’t wear that which is known to be men’s style of dressing” or vice versa. Rather a material or clothing which had been used by a man was not to be used by a woman. That, He said, would be an abomination.
