By: Rev Xendermyke Peter

Maybe I’m not yet ripe to talk about tithing. I remember that for many years I resolved to study this subject without teaching it until I  was convinced I had the totality of the revelation of the scriptures on this subject. That has been my approach to all matters of scripture. I have restrained myself from indulging in weighty arguments on this subject. This approach started when I had an elaborate vision many years ago where the Lord told me and three others that there is confusion in the church and the world today, that we should go and teach and defend the truth. I have tried to be careful, only teaching what I was sure of.  I don’t think I’m inferior to anyone in knowledge but we have to be careful what we teach just the same way we have to be careful what we hear.

Now I will say that Tithes belong to the lesser matters of the kingdom (Matt 23:23) We may not ignore it, but it cannot form the core of our message except as it relates to Christ. I do not see how a lighter matter should divide the body of Christ. The issues that engaged the attention of the early church up to the 16th century were matters bothering on christology (the divinity and deity of Jesus, the the means of salvation, etc.

Over the last couple of months, there have been a flurry of posts and counter posts, comments and counter comments on tithes, to give or not to give. I was tempted earlier today to venture into such an argument. I only had to take out my comments. If you observe carefully, you will notice that most hairsplitting doctrines center around lesser matters of the kingdom.  All churches and believers do not argue that killing, fornication, stealing, hatred, etc are sins. They all agree that these are sins. Their arguments are always on things like hair styles, dress styles, drinking of alcohol, prosperity, contemporary gospel music (and all things contemporary), cosmetics, tithes, etc. Thus, Christ is not the center but their pet beliefs and doctrines.

Listening to arguments on both sides of the divides on tithes, i can understand both ways. Each argument has some merit. But these heated arguments are very unnecessary. I have seen some call those who disagree with them Antichrist, demon possessed, etc. It is good to have accurate knowledge on a subject. I think I have it now. But I’m not going to talk about that now. For very practical purposes, I can only say that neither tithing nor “no-tithing” matters. It is doing our services of love that counts. It will interest you to know that when I believed that failure to pay tithe faithfully was a sin , I didn’t give my tithes faithfully. Now that I no longer believe so, I give my tithes faithfully with all eagerness and joy. This and more are my service of love.

For the records, I GIVE MY TITHES joyfully and eagerly! This writing is already long. I shall talk more about this subject in another post. Meanwhile, let’s talk more of the things that edify the body, save the world, and glorify Christ.

Grace and peace be multiplied
